Reigning NFL Most Valuable Player Matthew Stafford has agreed to a one-year, $55 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams, first reported by Adam Schefter and later confirmed by the team.

The deal will include $60 million in total, counting the incentives. The move comes just weeks after the Rams drafted QB Ty Simpson out of Alabama with the 13th overall pick.
That selection was a bit of a shocker and suggested that the Rams may be preparing for the post-Stafford era. But Thursday’s news shows that the team still wants Stafford around as long as possible.
After the pick, head coach Sean McVay reminded the world that the Rams are still led by Stafford and that Simpson would be competing for the backup spot.
“Let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team. You get a chance to be able to address the backup quarterback, we’ve got Stetson, we’ve talked about the importance of [former Rams back-up Jimmy Garoppolo].”
Stafford took home his first career MVP last season after finishing with 4,707 passing yards and 46 passing touchdowns to go along with just eight interceptions.
He led the Rams to a 12-5 record before falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC championship. With one year remaining on his current deal, he’ll now be under contract through the 2027 season while earning over $100 million.
