Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza after team falls to 34-47

In the midst of a disappointing campaign, the New York Mets announced on Friday that they have fired team manager Carlos Mendoza.

Despite one of the highest payrolls in baseball, the Mets are near the bottom of the standings with a 34-47 record so far. In the announcement, the team also confirmed that Andy Green will serve as the interim manager for the remainder of the season.

“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said in a statement. “Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.”

The 46-year-old first took over for the Mets during the 2024 season and helped guide them to an appearance in the NL Championship.

In 2025, the team kept this hot streak going early, but collapsed during the last few months of the campaign and missed the postseason entirely.

That lack of success has carried over into this season as the Mets enter Friday’s matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies on a six-game losing streak.

Cohen went on to commend Mendoza’s commitment while admitting that this season has been a failure and that change was needed.

“He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best,” Cohen said. “Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”
