Editorial Policy

Standards, Ethics & Content Guidelines

Table of Contents

1. Introduction & Mission

Ball Exclusives is a digital sports media platform dedicated to delivering accurate, compelling, and timely coverage of basketball and sports news at every level — from the NBA and college basketball to international leagues and beyond. This Editorial Policy defines the standards and practices that govern all content published on ballexclusives.com, its associated social media channels, newsletters, and any other distribution platforms operated under the Ball Exclusives brand.

Our mission is to be the most trusted and engaging destination for sports fans seeking news, analysis, highlights, and commentary. We achieve this mission by committing to the principles outlined in this policy: independence, accuracy, fairness, transparency, and accountability.

Every member of the Ball Exclusives team — staff writers, editors, contributors, freelancers, and social media managers — is expected to read, understand, and adhere to this policy. Violations may result in corrective action, content removal, or termination of the working relationship.

2. Editorial Independence

Ball Exclusives operates with full editorial independence. Our coverage decisions are based solely on news value, audience interest, and journalistic merit. No advertiser, sponsor, business partner, investor, or outside party has any influence over our editorial content, story selection, or the framing of our reporting.

2.1  Separation of Church and State

The editorial team operates independently from the business, advertising, and partnerships teams. Commercial agreements do not entitle any external party to favorable coverage, the suppression of unfavorable stories, or editorial approval rights of any kind. Advertising sales staff may not represent to any client that they can influence editorial content.

2.2  Freedom from External Pressure

Editors and writers are empowered to pursue and publish stories without interference. If any staff member or contributor is approached by an outside party attempting to influence coverage, they must report the interaction to the Editor-in-Chief immediately. Ball Exclusives will document and, where appropriate, publicly disclose such attempts.

3. Accuracy & Fact-Checking

Accuracy is the foundation of our credibility. Every factual claim published by Ball Exclusives must be verified before publication. We do not publish rumors, speculation, or unverified reports as fact.

3.1  Verification Standards

Before publishing any factual claim, writers and editors must:

  • Confirm the information with at least one reliable, primary source (official team statements, league announcements, verified athlete social media accounts, or direct quotes from credentialed parties).
  • Cross-reference breaking news against at least two independent, credible sources before treating it as confirmed.
  • Clearly label any information that has not been independently confirmed using language such as “reportedly,” “sources indicate,” or “according to [source].”
  • Verify the accuracy of all statistics, dates, names, scores, and contract figures against official records or authoritative databases.

3.2  Breaking News Protocol

In fast-moving news situations, Ball Exclusives prioritizes being right over being first. If a story cannot be adequately confirmed, we will acknowledge that a report is circulating and note that we are working to verify it rather than publishing unconfirmed information as fact. Stories published as “developing” must be updated promptly as new information becomes available.

3.3  Anonymous & Confidential Sources

Ball Exclusives recognizes that some of the most important sports reporting relies on sources who are not in a position to speak on the record. We will protect the identities of confidential sources. However, before relying on anonymous sourcing, editors must satisfy themselves that:

  • The source has direct, firsthand knowledge of the information provided.
  • The information cannot reasonably be obtained on the record.
  • At least one additional source can corroborate the core claim, or the single source is demonstrably reliable based on a track record.
  • The public interest in reporting the story outweighs the risks associated with anonymity.

The identity of all confidential sources must be disclosed to the Editor-in-Chief, who will maintain strict confidentiality. We do not use anonymous sources to convey personal attacks, unfounded speculation, or opinion disguised as fact.

4. Fairness & Balance

4.1  The Right of Reply

Any individual, organization, or institution that is the subject of a negative or critical story must be given a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication. We will make genuine, documented attempts to reach all named parties. If a subject declines to comment or does not respond within a reasonable timeframe, we will note this in the story. We do not mischaracterize the position of any party and will include substantive responses in full where space permits.

4.2  Opinion vs. Reporting

Ball Exclusives publishes both reported news and opinion/analysis content. All opinion and commentary pieces must be clearly labeled as such. Opinion writers are free to express strong views, but those views must be grounded in fact and must not misrepresent events, statistics, or the positions of others. Opinion content does not exempt contributors from the accuracy standards outlined in Section 3.

4.3  Avoiding Stereotyping & Bias

Ball Exclusives is committed to fair, unbiased coverage of all athletes, teams, leagues, and communities regardless of race, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background. Our coverage must not perpetuate harmful stereotypes or apply double standards in how we describe or evaluate athletes and public figures. Language that demeans or reduces individuals based on protected characteristics is never acceptable.

5. Originality & Attribution

5.1  Original Content

Ball Exclusives is committed to producing original journalism, analysis, and commentary. All work published under the Ball Exclusives brand must be the original creation of the credited author, or must be clearly attributed to the original source. Plagiarism — presenting another party’s words, ideas, or reporting as your own — is a serious violation of this policy and will result in immediate corrective action, including potential termination.

5.2  Sourcing & Attribution

When Ball Exclusives reports on, references, or builds upon the work of another news organization or content creator, we must attribute that source clearly and link to the original piece where possible. We do not rewrite or substantially reproduce the reporting of other outlets without appropriate credit. Aggregation is permissible, but Ball Exclusives must add original value — through additional reporting, context, or analysis — and must not substitute for the original source.

5.3  Use of Press Releases & Official Statements

Official statements, press releases, and league/team announcements may be quoted directly but must be identified as such. When a story is based primarily on a press release, this should be transparent in the reporting. We encourage reporters to go beyond the press release to seek independent context and additional perspectives.

5.4  Artificial Intelligence

Ball Exclusives may use AI-assisted tools for research, data analysis, translations, or draft assistance. However, all published content must be written, reviewed, edited, and approved by a human journalist or editor. AI-generated text may not be published without substantial human revision, fact-checking, and editorial oversight. We do not publish fully AI-generated articles without human authorship. Where AI tools have contributed to reporting in a substantive way, we will disclose this to readers.

6. Corrections Policy

Ball Exclusives is committed to transparency when we make mistakes. We correct errors promptly, prominently, and without attempting to obscure the fact that a correction has been made.

6.1  Correction Procedure

  • Minor factual errors (e.g., incorrect score, misspelled name) will be corrected directly in the article with a note at the top reading: “Correction: An earlier version of this article [description of error]. This has been corrected.”
  • Significant errors that materially affect the substance or fairness of a story will be corrected with a full Editor’s Note explaining what was wrong and what the correct information is.
  • Corrections will never be made silently. The article will always reflect the correction and its date.
  • Corrections to social media posts must be made in the same channel and with similar prominence as the original post.

6.2  Clarifications & Updates

When new developments materially change the context of a published story, we will update the article and note the update with a timestamp. Clarifications — which address ambiguous but not necessarily incorrect statements — will be noted separately from corrections.

6.3  Reporting Errors

Readers who believe they have identified an error are encouraged to contact us at corrections@ballexclusives.com. All reported errors will be reviewed by the editorial team and a response provided within two business days.

Correction Contact

To report a factual error or request a correction, please email corrections@ballexclusives.com with “Correction Request” in the subject line. Please include the article title, URL, the specific claim you believe to be incorrect, and the supporting evidence for the correction.

7. Sponsored Content & Advertising Disclosures

Ball Exclusives may publish sponsored content, branded content, and native advertising in partnership with commercial partners. We are committed to ensuring that our readers can always distinguish between editorial content and paid or sponsored material.

7.1  Disclosure Requirements

All sponsored or paid content must carry a clear and prominent disclosure label such as “Sponsored,” “Paid Partnership,” or “Presented by [Brand].” This label must appear:

  • At the top of any sponsored article, video, or post — before any substantive content.
  • In any social media post that is part of a paid partnership or affiliate arrangement.
  • In any email newsletter section that is paid promotion.

7.2  No Editorial Endorsement

Sponsored content does not constitute an editorial endorsement of any product, service, or company by Ball Exclusives. The views expressed in sponsored content are those of the sponsor and do not reflect the editorial positions of Ball Exclusives. Sponsored content may not contain false or misleading claims, and Ball Exclusives reserves the right to reject or remove any sponsored content that conflicts with our standards.

7.3  Affiliate Links

Ball Exclusives may include affiliate links in editorial content (e.g., links to sports gear, ticket platforms, or streaming services) from which we earn a commission on qualifying purchases. When affiliate links are present in editorial content, this will be disclosed with a statement such as: “Ball Exclusives may earn a commission from links in this article.”

8. Social Media Standards

Social media platforms are an extension of Ball Exclusives’ editorial voice and are subject to the same standards of accuracy, fairness, and professionalism as our website content.

8.1  Official Accounts

All official Ball Exclusives social media accounts are operated under the direction of the editorial team. Content posted on official accounts must comply with all sections of this Editorial Policy. Breaking news posted to social media must meet the same verification standards as website content, adapted appropriately for the speed of the medium.

8.2  Staff Personal Accounts

Ball Exclusives staff and contributors are free to maintain personal social media accounts. However, they must clearly distinguish their personal views from Ball Exclusives’ editorial positions. When identifying themselves as Ball Exclusives staff, their public activity on social media reflects on the brand and must not:

  • Publish unverified breaking news in a manner that could be attributed to Ball Exclusives.
  • Express strong partisan political opinions in ways that could undermine the perception of Ball Exclusives’ editorial impartiality.
  • Share or amplify content that is false, defamatory, discriminatory, or harassing.
  • Disclose unpublished Ball Exclusives reporting, source identities, or confidential business information.

8.3  Engagement & Comments

Ball Exclusives’ social media accounts aim to engage meaningfully with the sports community. Staff may engage with audience members in a professional and respectful manner. Harassment, trolling, or engagement in bad-faith arguments is not appropriate. Staff should disengage from hostile interactions and escalate any sustained harassment to the editorial team.

9. Conflicts of Interest

Ball Exclusives requires that all staff and contributors identify and disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could compromise — or appear to compromise — the integrity of their journalism. When in doubt, disclose.

9.1  Financial Conflicts

Staff and contributors must disclose any financial interest in entities they cover, including ownership stakes, stock holdings, business relationships, or family financial ties. Staff members with a material financial conflict must recuse themselves from covering the relevant entity.

9.2  Personal Relationships

Writers and editors must disclose close personal relationships — including friendships, romantic relationships, or family connections — with athletes, agents, team officials, or other individuals they cover. The Editor-in-Chief will assess whether recusal or additional oversight is warranted.

9.3  Gifts, Hospitality & Freebies

Ball Exclusives staff may accept press credentials, review copies of games/products relevant to coverage, and media access customarily provided to journalists. Staff may not accept cash, gifts above a nominal value, excessive hospitality (meals, travel, entertainment) or other items of value from parties they cover. Any gifts received that exceed a nominal value must be reported to the Editor-in-Chief and will be either returned or donated.

9.4  Outside Employment

Staff and contributors must disclose any paid outside work — including work for teams, leagues, athletes’ representatives, or competing media organizations — to the Editor-in-Chief before accepting such work. Outside employment that creates a conflict with Ball Exclusives coverage responsibilities requires prior approval.

10. Privacy & Ethical Reporting

10.1  Privacy of Public Figures

Athletes, coaches, team executives, and others who have voluntarily entered public life accept greater scrutiny of their professional conduct. Their public roles, professional performance, public statements, and actions taken in their professional capacity are legitimate subjects of coverage. However, even public figures retain a reasonable expectation of privacy in areas not relevant to their public roles, including their minor children’s lives, medical information (unless directly related to their public role or disclosed by them), and their private relationships (unless voluntarily made public).

10.2  Private Individuals

Private individuals — including family members, support staff, or members of the public who appear in sports contexts — warrant substantially greater privacy protections. We will not publish identifying information about private individuals without a clear, compelling public interest justification. We take special care with images and information concerning minor children.

10.3  Sensitive Topics

Coverage of mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault allegations, and other sensitive topics requires heightened care. We follow established journalism best practices including:

  • Not identifying victims of sexual assault without their explicit consent.
  • Treating mental health disclosures with sensitivity and avoiding stigmatizing language.
  • Being cautious about publishing details that could cause additional harm to victims or families.
  • Consulting with the Editor-in-Chief before publishing in particularly sensitive cases.

10.4  Handling Allegations

Ball Exclusives reports on allegations of misconduct with care and fairness to all parties. We distinguish clearly between allegations and proven facts. We do not treat an accusation as proof of guilt. All parties named in allegations must be given a genuine opportunity to respond, and their responses must be included in any published report.

11. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Ball Exclusives is committed to reflecting the full diversity of the sports world and the communities we serve. This commitment extends to our content, our sourcing, and our team.

11.1  Inclusive Coverage

We are committed to providing equitable coverage across genders, leagues, and sports. We actively work to ensure that women’s sports, non-mainstream leagues, and underrepresented communities receive meaningful coverage and are not marginalized in our editorial priorities.

11.2  Diverse Sourcing

Our reporting should seek out and include voices from diverse backgrounds — athletes, coaches, analysts, and commentators across races, genders, nationalities, and disciplines. Homogenous sourcing narrows our perspective and undermines the quality of our journalism.

11.3  Language & Terminology

We use respectful, contemporary language when describing individuals and communities. We follow updated style guidance on identity-related terminology and commit to updating our language as community standards evolve. Staff are encouraged to consult editorial leadership when uncertain about appropriate terminology.

12. Community Standards & User-Generated Content

12.1  Comments & Moderation

Ball Exclusives may enable reader comments on certain articles and platforms. All reader comments are subject to moderation. We reserve the right to remove any comment that contains hate speech, harassment, threats, defamatory statements, spam, or content that is otherwise harmful or illegal. We do not moderate based on political opinion or viewpoint on sports matters, but we will act against personal attacks and discriminatory language.

12.2  User-Generated Content

When Ball Exclusives shares, reposts, or incorporates user-generated content (such as fan photos or social media posts), we will seek permission from the original creator, provide attribution, and refrain from using such content in a manner that misrepresents the creator’s intent.

13. Policy Enforcement & Review

13.1  Responsibility for Compliance

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for enforcing this Editorial Policy and for ensuring all staff receive appropriate training and guidance. Questions about the application of this policy should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief.

13.2  Reporting Policy Concerns

Any staff member or contributor who believes this policy is being violated, or who is under pressure to violate it, should report their concern to the Editor-in-Chief or, if the concern involves the Editor-in-Chief, directly to Ball Exclusives’ senior leadership. Ball Exclusives prohibits retaliation against anyone who raises a good-faith concern about editorial conduct or policy compliance.

13.3  Policy Review

This Editorial Policy will be reviewed at least annually by the editorial leadership team. Updates will be made as necessary to reflect changes in journalism best practices, legal requirements, platform policies, and the evolving nature of sports media. All revisions will be documented, dated, and communicated to all staff and contributors.
