Luka Doncic

Former Mavs owner Mark Cuban shares thoughts on Luka trade

Mark Cuban looks up at the scoreboard during a timeout.

Former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was known for being outspoken and while he no longer has an impact on the team’s decision’s, fans are still curious as to what Cuban thinks about the team trading Luka Doncic to the L.A. Lakers. After initially brushing past the question, Cuban recently made an appearance on the “Your Mom’s House” podcast and shared his opinion on the move.

“I get a text. It was from our general manager. I thought he was asking me what I thought, and then I realized very quickly he was telling me what happened,” Cuban said. “And I told him I didn’t agree with it… But it wasn’t my decision to make.”

Cuban was involved in drafting Doncic to the Mavs and already expressed that he was in disbelief when he first heard the news of the trade.

“If I had any influence, the trade wouldn’t happen,” Cuban said. “I was just as dumbfounded as everybody else. After I sold the Mavericks, the new owner Patrick Dumont decided that, ‘O.K., in Nico we trust.’ So, here we are.”

The trade sparked widespread protests and outcries from Mavs fans around the world. It was possibly the first time in NBA history that a player of Doncic’s caliber and age was traded away in such a deal. In fact, Cuban said a few years ago that he would divorce his wife if he had to in order to avoid trading Doncic.

Regardless, the move is complete and the Mavs appear to be the losers of the trade, especially considering their current injury outlook.
