Sweden sends 5 past Tunisia in their highest scoring World Cup match since 1938

Sweden put five goals past Tunisia, the most they’ve scored in a World Cup match since 1938, where they managed to score eight against Cuba.

Sweden took no time in making their presence known, scoring their first goal of the night, and the tournament, in the seventh minute.

Yasin Ayari drove a strike from 28 yards out. With Tunisian goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh being well out of position, all Ayari had to do was elevate the ball into the top corner.

Tunisia struggled to find any large offensive chances, struggling in the final third during their approach on net.

The Swedes would double their advantage in the 30th minute when Alexander Isak drove the length of the field, slicing his way through the Tunisian defense.

With a quick cut to his right and an on-target strike that Chamakh just missed, Sweden took a 2-0 lead.

But Tunisia would not go away, late in the first half a strong pass into the box created the opportunity they needed.

Hannibal Mejbri laced the ball into the box, where Omar Rekik directed it with a header right into the back of the net, cutting the Swedish lead in half just before the break.

The score remained 2-1 until the 59th minute, where a Ellyes Skhiri mistake deep in Tunisia territory allowed Isak to lay off a pass to Viktor GyΓΆkeres who would immediately turn the mistake into a goal.

And Sweden wouldn’t stop there.

A Mattias Svanberg goal would originally be ruled offsides, but after a brief review, the ruling would be overturned, giving Sweden their fourth of the night.

And with less than a minute to play, in the 90+5 minute, a Tunisian turnover allowed Ayari to officially slam the door shut with his second goal of the night and the fifth for Sweden.

And with Ayari’s brace, the Swedes would end the night with their most goals in a World Cup match since 1938.

Sweden and Tunisia both have tough matches welcoming them on Sunday.

Tunisia will play Japan at noon, and Sweden will match up against the Netherlands at 1 p.m.
