Germany waltz past Curaçao in 7-1 shellacking

Germany showed the rest of the world that they have a World Cup final in their sights after thrashing Curaçao 7-1.

The scoring got started early in the first half.

German midfielder Florian Wirtz tapped a first touch pass to  Felix Nmecha who whipped a strike with his right foot into the back of the net to give Germany a one goal lead.

But the smallest nation to ever qualify for a World Cup remain quiet only until the 21st minute.

A blocked Jürgen Locadia shot found itself right at the feet of Curaçaoan midfielder Livano Comenencia who buried the rebound with a hearty left-footed drive to even the score 1-1.

Germany did not remain even for long, as just 17 minutes later, Nico Schlotterbeck headed in a corner to give Germany an advantage that they would not relinquish.

For the remainder of the first half, it seemed the scrappy Curaçaoans would carry themselves into the half just a goal down against one of the world’s finest.

But a foul two minutes into stoppage time gave Germany a penalty kick right before the half.

Kai Havertz stepped up to the spot and sunk home Germany’s third goal of the day.

Germany once again would waste no time breaking out the offense early, just two minutes into the second half, they would grab their fourth.

This goal saw Joshua Kimmich slot a pass into the box to fellow Bayern Munich teammate Jamal Musiala.

Musiala would strike the narrow angle opportunity onto goal, sneaking it past Curaçaoan goalkeeper Eloy Room.

The Germans would continue to score, with goals from Nathaniel Brown in the 68′, Deniz Undav in the 78′ and Havertz’s second goal in the 88′ to bring their total on the day to seven.

Germany would take this win in dominant 7-1 fashion, as for Curaçao, going toe-to-toe with one of the favorites to win the tournament is nothing to scoff at. 

The small island nation concluded their day being the smallest nation to ever score a goal in the World Cup.

They’ll take on Ecuador for their second match of the group stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

The Germans will look to continue their dominate ways, facing off next against Cote d’Ivoire at 4 p.m., also on Saturday.
