Australia secures three points in Group D with a 2-0 victory over Turkey.

This matchup had a bit conflict even before anyone every stepped foot on the pitch.

According to Ben Kule of the Associated Press, Turkish captain Hakan Çalhanoglu made a comment about how he expected Turkey to perform in their first match.

“I think we will dominate, [Saturday] the game, because we have more qualities and a more talented team,” Çalhanoglu said.

The Australians got off to a rocking start when Paul Okon-Engstler sent in a deep pass that found itself at the feet of Nestory Irankunda.

Irankunda took an incredible first touch to avoid Turkish defender Merih Demiral, carrying the ball into the box and sending it home with a powerful right-footed strike.

Neither team could manage to score for the remainder of the half, but Turkey certainly tried their best to do so.

The Turks outshot Australia 10 to four in the first half, but had half of those efforts veer off target.

Entering the second half, Turkey continued to press and challenge the Australian defense.

But the Aussies stood strong throughout the early minutes of the second half. Spoiling opportunity after opportunity, not allowing Turkey to mount anything offensively.

Through the first 22 minutes of the second half, Australian players blocked seven of the 10 Turkish shots.

And Australia would continue to “park the bus”, desperately fighting off an almost never-ending onslaught from the Turkish offensive push.

However, in the 75th minute and in the blink in of an eye, a quick break away for Australia turned into a second goal when Connor Metcalfe slotted a strike past Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir.

Australia would continue to stand tall defensively and held onto their two-goal advantage to stun Turkey with a 2-0 victory.

The Aussies were massively out possessed in this contest, maintaining the ball just 28% of the time throughout the match. Also being outshot 30 to nine.

But it was defense for Australia, blocking 12 shots, nine of which came in the second half, that won them this affair.

Australia will matchup next against the United States at 3 p.m. on Friday.

As for Turkey, they now face a must win situation against Paraguay at 11 p.m. also on Friday.
