After the Philadelphia 76ers reached the NBA Finals in 2001, the team fell apart the following season. The 76ers won just 43 games and reached the playoffs as the sixth seed. In the playoffs, the 76ers lost 3-2 to the Boston Celtics.

It was after the season when Iverson delivered his famous press conference, responding to his head coach’s harsh criticism, including comments about his reluctance to practice.
In the press conference, Iverson said the word practice 22 times. It became a huge funny moment in the sports and entertainment world, but there was a serious reason behind it.
Iverson wasn’t being ignorant or hateful at the time. He was grappling with the murder of his best friend, Rahsaan Langeford, whose trial began just days before his infamous practice rant.
Langeford was murdered about seven months prior to the press conference, and Iverson didn’t tell anyone all season, as he tried to keep his personal life separated from his NBA career.
What made things worse was that 76ers head coach Larry Brown had this to say in response to Iverson’s practice rant:
“I assume he went and fooled around somewhere,” Brown said, tipping his hand upward like a bottle.
Iverson may have bottled up his friend’s murder throughout the season, but he finally let it out during the press conference following his infamous practice rant. Yet, the footage remains overlooked, rarely discussed or shown.
“I’m upset for one reason: ‘Cause I’m in here. I lost. I lost my best friend. I lost him, and I lost this year,” Iverson said.
“Everything is just going downhill for me, as far as just that. You know, as far as my life. And then I’m dealing with this… My best friend is dead. Dead. And we lost. And this is what I have to go through for the rest of the summer until the season is all over again.”

Would fans have reacted differently to Iverson if they had known the real reason behind his practice rant? Probably not, but it serves as a reminder that Iverson is human, just like the rest of us.
