Switzerland and Colombia went scoreless for two hours, leading to the fourth penalty shootout of the Round of 16.

The first half remained relatively quiet with just seven attempts on net between the two sides.

And while Colombia outshot the Swiss five to two, both of those strikes for Switzerland would require a save from Camilo Vargas.

In the 21st minute, Colombia’s Gustavo Puerta would force an incredible save from Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

And in the 30th, Switzerland would see their best chance, courtesy of Fabian Rieder.

The second half would remain quiet, just like the first, with the first moment of excitement coming in the 72nd minute.

Colombian goalkeeper Vargas and Swiss forward Breel Embolo would come together in a harsh collision, which saw both players remain down following the contact.

But following the brief respite, both would rise to their feet and share a moment of sportsmanship.

Switzerland came inches away from breaking the deadlock late.

Seconds into stoppage-time Dan Ndoye would receive a great chance to put Switzerland up late but missed just wide.

Neither side could break the deadlock at full-time, bringing the match to extra time and marking the sixth to do so this tournament.

Just minutes into extra time Colombian players shouted for a penalty after what they deemed was a foul in the box.

But referee Iván Arcides Barton Cisneros would wave it off.

In the 101st minute, Jáminton Campaz almost put Colombia ahead with a spectacular goal.

Vargas would be forced to make his second save of the match following a great opportunity in the box for Switzerland that would force the Colombian to think quickly.

In the 115th minute, it seemed Campaz found the go-ahead goal, but he would air his strike just above the bar.

Just like the first 90, neither side could find a goal in the extra 30, leading to the fourth penalty shootout of the round of 16.

Juan Fernando Quintero would step up first for Colombia and smash it home.

Granit Xhaka would elevate the ball left, just high enough to get past the keeper Vargas.

Davinson Sánchez would smash his strike onto the cross bar and out.

Zeki Amdouni stepped up to give the Swiss the lead and buried it into the bottom right corner.

Jáminton Campaz would look to bring the match level, getting it under Kobel who guessed correctly.

Manuel Akanji came to the spot to put Switzerland back ahead, but he would sky it well over the bar.

Former Columbus Crew member Cucho Hernández’s strike would be blocked.

Cedric Itten would put Colombia in a must score situation, burying his strike middle-middle.

Luis Díaz, stepping up in a must score situation, would sink the penalty.

Rubén Vargas would look to put Switzerland in the quarterfinals with a score.

And he would, sending the Swiss through to face Argentina at 9 p.m. on Saturday.
