LeBron James

As the NBA world awaits a free agency decision from four-time MVP LeBron James, it’s reminded of a previous move that changed the landscape of the league.

16 years ago today, James appeared on ESPN and announced his plan to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and join the Miami Heat.

He joined forces with star guard Dwyane Wade and star big man Chris Bosh in what became known as “The Decision.”

The decision sent shockwaves throughout the NBA world and Wade himself held a watch party to tune into James’ announcement, noting how nervous he was beforehand.

As Miami celebrated when news broke that the reigning MVP would be coming into town, the city of Cleveland was angry and heartbroken.

Now 16 years removed from the infamous announcement that preceded to championships in Miami, James has the opportunity to make history repeat itself.

As of publication, both the Heat and the Cavaliers are among the top destinations for James, who’s leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after seven seasons.

Returning to Cleveland would be the storybook ending that Cavs fans have hoped for, but another move to Miami would likely be the best option for the pursuit of another championship.

Regardless, this wait feels very reminiscent of the one fans had to endure 16 years ago.
