High-school state champion and Tulane Green Wave signee Deontavis Cooper has died in a single-vehicle accident at the age of 17, with the team confirming the news on Sunday.
Two unnamed passengers were reportedly hospitalized after the crash.

“Deontavis exemplified dedication, resilience, and a positive outlook,” the team’s statement read. “His love for the game and his unwavering work ethic showed in everything he did, and he was on the path to making a significant impact both on the field and within the community.”
Cooper was an offensive lineman and helped lead Thomas County Central High School to a perfect 15-0 record in 2025 and a state championship victory.
He had signed with Tulane in December after reportedly receiving over 20 Division I scholarship offers.
