Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has been ruled out of Thursday’s matchup against the L.A. Lakers due to injury management. The 38-year-old continues to battle a lingering knee injury.
He will now sit out of the first half of the Warriors’ back-to-back and could play against the Sacramento Kings on Friday.
With LeBron James missing opening night and Curry missing both matchups in February, the regular season will end without seeing the two actually go head-to-head.
Their longtime rivalry has been one of the most memorable NBA storylines of the last decade. James leads the all-time regular season matchups with a 14-13 record, but Curry is ahead 17-12 in the postseason.
They will only face each other at all this season if they happen to collide in the playoffs. The decision to rest Curry reflects caution from the Warriors, who are already locked in the play-in tournament as the 10th seed.
For the Lakers, their fate lies partially in the hands of other teams in the Western Conference, but they’re guaranteed to finish as the 3rd, 4th or 5th seed.
