Steve Kerr’s historic contract extension indicates how valuable the Golden State Warriors players and executive leadership view him. Kerr led the Warriors to four NBA championships, making him one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. One should never, however, overlook the excellent job Mark Jackson did as the Warriors head coach. Kerr inherited one of the most talented and well-coached teams in the NBA (and in NBA history), one with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

I don’t mention Mark Jackson to diminish Kerr’s accomplishments as the Golden State Warriors head coach. Instead, I include Jackson because, too often, the story of an individual’s greatness, such as Kerr’s story of greatness, lacks a complete account of the people who helped to make that success possible. Jackson’s work played an instrumental role in making possible the four NBA championships Kerr’s Warriors won.

Steve Kerr has had to help the Warriors navigate some challenging issues, especially as of late involving Draymond Green. Although he hasn’t handled these issues beautifully, Kerr has, with some hiccups along the way, kept the Warriors focused on winning championships. Such leadership is partly responsible for why his team contends for the NBA championship each season.

Steve Kerr’s historic contract

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Steve Kerr’s historic contract extension, a two-year $35 million extension, makes him the highest-paid coach in NBA history. Through this deal, Steph Curry and Steve Kerr will continue demonstrating their greatness through the 2025-2026 season. Kerr’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

In response to the news about Steve Kerr’s historic contract extension, Draymond Green said, “I think it’s incredible. Wouldn’t want to finish my time here with any other coach. What he’s meant to this franchise…the winning ways that he brought here, you can’t replace that…He got what he deserved.”

Golden State’s Next Four Games

Steve Kerr’s Golden State Warriors are currently 9th in the Western Conference standings. The Warriors are only four games behind the fifth-place team, the New Orleans Pelicans. The next four games will be difficult, however.

Three of the next four games are on the road: the New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, and Boston Celtics. After those three consecutive road games, the Warriors will have a home battle against the Milwaukee Bucks, which, of course, is a massive challenge.

Without question, Steve Kerr’s historic contract extension will be earned throughout these four games.
