Yesterday, Kirk was tragically assassinated while at one of his debating events in Utah.

Kirk was highly controversial and often spoke about topics that offended others. Despite how you felt about Kirk, this article isn’t going to focus on that.
Instead, we will focus on basketball. Kirk was once asked about his opinion on the NBA GOAT debate involving LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
He gave his answer in a debate with a debater named Jerome.
Kirk: “Do you think it’s easier to score points in 2025 or in 1995 in the NBA?”
Jerome: “I think it’s easier to score points now. Most definitely now.”
Kirk: “Okay. So therefore, when we look at point totals of LeBron, we got to take that with an asterisk, right? Because where was defense more emphasized? In the early ’90s, NBA or today?”
Jerome: “Defense was definitely more emphasized in the early ’90s.”
Kirk: “When was the NBA more popular? ’90s or today?”
Jerome: “I think the NBA is more popular today.”
Kirk: “No, it’s not even close. NBA’s gone down. It’s a joke. The ratings are way down… The last 10 years, who’s been the face of the NBA?”
Jerome: “LeBron.”
Kirk: “In the ’90s, who was the face of the NBA?”
Jerome: “Jordan.”
Kirk: “Wait, so Jordan made the NBA more popular? LeBron made the NBA a joke.”
Kirk obviously had a strong opinion on who the GOAT of the NBA is, like he had a strong stance on political topics. It’s okay to have opinions and discuss topics, but resorting to hate speech and violence is never the answer.
This is something NBA fans need to work on. Fans of different eras or players often resort to being hateful to others just because they have a different opinion.
As fans, let’s just enjoy the game and the players today, while respecting the players of the past.
