The NBA has approved a change allowing players to fire up long ball shots at the end of quarters without fear. What is known as the ‘heave rule’ will allow players to take those long shots without worrying about hurting their shooting percentage.

The official rule is as follows, per the NBA:
“The NBA will tell teams that any shot taken within the final three seconds of the first three quarters and is launched from at least 36 feet away on any play that starts in the backcourt will count as a team shot attempt — but not an individual one.”
This appears to be another way for the NBA to cater to its players. A player shouldn’t be worried about their percentages and should be more concerned with trying to get one last made bucket for their team, if possible.
