The Minnesota Timberwolves are in search of a running mate in the backcourt alongside Anthony Edwards and it could be coming the form of a former NBA champion.
According to a report from The Athletic, the Timberwolves are evaluating several options ahead of the NBA Draft, with one of those being a trade for Boston Celtics guard Derrick White. In fact, the front office has been most aggressive in his pursuit of all options.

“Minnesota has been most aggressive in pursuing White, the Celtics’ defensive mastermind who has the experience and the savvy to help Edwards and the Wolves break through in the West,” wrote reporter John Krawcynski. “White turns 32 next month and saw his three-point shooting percentage drop considerably this season, but so far, the Celtics have rebuffed Wolves’ advances.”
Despite the noted shooting struggles, White still turned in a strong 2026 season averaging 16.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.3 blocks through 77 games.
Adding White to the rotation would balance out Minnesota’s lineup which is front line heavy with Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert holdings things down. But with Mike Conley approaching the end of his career, most of the ball handling and play making falls on the shoulders of Edwards.
Despite little reported interest so far in a trade involving White, Boston may still be aggressive in other areas, namely a deal involving Giannis Antetokounmpo.
