Sixers fined $100K for public comments on Joel Embiid’s health status

The NBA has fined the Philadelphia 76ers $100,000 for their public statements made about Joel Embiid‘s health and playing status.

The league’s investigation did not find evidence that the Sixers violated player participation policies through missing games, but did so by making inconsistent public statements about the status of Embiid’s left knee injury.

After missing the entire preseason, Embiid will miss his fourth regular season game Wednesday night against the Detroit Pistons due to “left knee injury management”. He missed all of February and March of last season with a meniscus injury and returned for the end of the season and the playoffs. He went on to play for Team USA during this summer’s Olympics and helped win the gold medal.

Sixers head coach Nick Nurse declined to answer questions Tuesday regarding the health of Embiid and Paul George. The team has reported that both players have participated in parts of practice and that they will be reevaluated later this week.
