Michael Carrick’s Future Hangs on Manchester United vs. Aston Villa

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces a decisive Premier League match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday — a result that could determine whether he remains in charge beyond the upcoming international break.

United recorded a Champions League comeback win over Roma after nine matches without a victory. A loss to Aston Villa — especially if combined with other results — could leave United bottom of the Premier League table by Sunday night.

Carrick won 12 of 17 matches between January and May. Since then, he has won three and lost 14. Club leadership — including minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox — backed Carrick after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on October 25. Fan support for Carrick during that match, and anger directed at players, influenced the decision.

United leadership has emphasized player accountability as central to improvement. Internal assessments acknowledge that overhauling the entire squad is unrealistic — making a managerial change the most viable long-term option if results do not improve.

The club has not contacted potential successors directly. It maintains updated files on coaches previously considered — including candidates reviewed before Erik ten Hag’s retention in summer 2024 and those evaluated before Carrick signed his two-year contract in May.

Financial constraints shaped the summer transfer window. An initial £120 million budget expanded to £155 million to sign Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. Left back, centre back and striker remained unaddressed due to limited funds.

United reported a £43 million loss for the quarter ending in September. Berrada stated the summer strategy prioritized “financial sustainability.” The club spent £63.5 million acquiring land for a proposed 100,000-seat stadium — a move met with fan protests and chants criticizing ownership.

The board views the stadium as a long-term revenue lifeline amid mounting debt and no indication the Glazer family plans to sell. But with relegation now a tangible threat and form collapsing, the immediate priority is restoring competitiveness — beginning with Sunday’s match.

United travel to Liverpool on November 22. The international break begins immediately after Sunday’s fixture.

According to sources, club bosses want to see the energy and intensity displayed in the second half against Roma replicated against Villa — a benchmark they consider essential before extending Carrick’s mandate.

A turning point is imminent. Sunday’s result will reveal whether Carrick gets to lead it.
