The NCAA men's basketball tournament will expand to 76 teams for the 2027 edition — the largest field increase since the 64-team bracket debuted in 1985.
The new format retains 32 automatic qualifiers but raises the number of at-large bids to 44. A rebranded Opening Round replaces the First Four, featuring 12 games across two days in Dayton and Wichita. Four tripleheaders — six games per day — will be held, with staggered tip times beginning as early as 3:30 p.m. ET.

All Opening Round matchups will be equal-seed contests: primarily 11 vs. 11, plus some 10 vs. 10 and 12 vs. 12 pairings. The 16-seed line and half the 15-seed line will consist entirely of Opening Round survivors. Nearly one-third of the field — 24 teams — will compete in this round, with winners advancing to the traditional 64-team bracket starting Thursday.
Preseason top-seed projections name Florida, Duke, Illinois and Arizona. ESPN’s season-opening bracketology notes that Illinois may be without star forward David Mirkovic for much of the early season, potentially lowering its NCAA seed. History suggests only about half of preseason No. 1 seeds hold that line through Selection Sunday.
Geographic logistics are already shaping expectations. Illinois is projected to open in Louisville, advance through the Midwest Regional in Kansas City, and reach the Final Four in Detroit — a path offering favorable travel and rest. St. John’s cannot host East Regional games at Madison Square Garden; Louisville and Creighton are barred from hosting first- and second-round games in their home arenas. Dayton and Wichita State face no such restrictions if selected for Opening Round play.
The expansion also recalibrates upset potential. Double-digit seeds from one-bid leagues will likely land one or two seed lines lower than in past 68-team fields, reducing classic Cinderella opportunities. Meanwhile, 3- and 4-seeds will face tougher first-round opponents — former 13- and 14-seeds now seeded 11 or 12 — possibly yielding fewer but more consequential upsets in the Round of 64 and Round of 32. Six at-large winners from the Opening Round could emerge as live underdogs in 5–12, 6–11 and 7–10 matchups.
ESPN’s bracketology team notes that schools including Duke and Florida are slated to play Opening Round games in Charlotte; Arizona in Sacramento; UConn in Pittsburgh; Houston and Texas in Fort Worth; and Gonzaga in Spokane — aiding fan travel planning.
The expanded field takes effect for the 2027 NCAA tournament, following the conclusion of the 2026–27 regular season and conference tournaments.
