NCAA sends inquiry letter to Cincinnati regarding Brendan Sorsby

According to multiple reports on Wednesday, the NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to Cincinnati in regards to Brendan Sorsby‘s tenure on the football team.

Sorsby was ruled ineligible to compete by the NCAA earlier this year after he admitted to placing thousands of sports bets during his college career, including bets on his own team while playing for the Indiana Hoosiers as a freshman.

After that season, he transferred to Cincinatti and played on the Bearcats for two seasons before transferring to Texas Tech this offseason.

While the inquiry letter was expected and does not equate to wrongdoing, Cincinnati did not comment on it specifically, opting to address the overall situation as a whole.

“We have had continuous conversations with the NCAA since the initial reports related to impermissible sports wagering began,” the school’s statement read. “As we have stated before, we do not believe any athletics official or staff member was aware of any impermissible sports wagering.”

The NCAA investigated Sorsby’s gambling activity and he later admitting to placing bets on college and professional sports totaling at least $38,000 while at Cincinatti in 2024.

No evidence was found suggesting he placed bets on Cincinatti football during his tenure on the team.

Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, said last month that he believes the Bearcats were aware of Sorsby’s gambling and turned a blind eye. The school denied this claim and issued a statement to ESPN on the matter.

“All of our student-athletes receive extensive gambling education multiple times throughout the year, and we would never knowingly play an athlete who violated NCAA sports wagering regulations,” the statement read. “If we ever became aware of impermissible wagering, we would report to the NCAA and comply with sanctions.”
