Former AFL star Freddie McGee III pleads NFL case outside of Lions facility

Eric Woodyard/X

Freddie McGee III is a former college football player for Eastern Michigan and a former DPOY in the Arena Football League. He’s five years removed from college football and doesn’t have an agent, but that isn’t stopping him from making his case for a spot in the NFL.

McGee garnered national attention Monday as he was seen outside the Detroit Lions’ practice facility holding a sign that displayed his impressive AFL stats.

McGee has been a strong defensive player in the AFL, where he played last season after five seasons at Eastern Michigan from 2017-2021.

He spoke to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard while outside of the facility.

“I’ve had this goal since I was five years old, nothing’s ever come easy when it came to football,” he said. “I walked on, earned a scholarship, had to kind of do everything the hard way. I feel like that’s developed me for times like this… Hopefully the right person can see me and give me a shot.”

While McGee was outside of the Lions’ facility, he would likely accept an opportunity from any NFL team. But nothing would be more poetic than getting an NFL shot in his home state of Michigan.
