Monday morning started with a bang when the news broke that Michigan Wolverines coach Dusty May, who’s fresh off a national championship, is becoming the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

May only spent two seasons at Michigan, but he led the Wolverines to a 64-13 record during his tenure and capped it off with a national championship victory over the UConn Huskies in April.

He quickly became one of the most beloved coaches in program history, establishing a reputation as a dynamic and strategic coach with a knack for roster construction.

The news of his departure for the Dallas Mavericks stunned the basketball world and fans of both college basketball and the NBA chimed in.

While Mavericks fans seem elated by the arrival of their new head coach, Michigan fans are feeling the sting of losing a coach that was viewed as a potential mainstay for years to come.

In fairness, the Wolverines are still the remaining champs and will always be in the record books for their terrific 2026 March Madness run.

But that doesn’t make it easy to watch the coach that guided them there leave for the NBA.
