Fenerbahce interim coach Dirk Kuyt will face his former club Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League match Wednesday.

Kuyt, who played for Liverpool from 2006 to 2012, called the fixture a "very special occasion" but said his focus is entirely on Fenerbahce’s performance. "I'm here for the club — to show the fans, who deserve much more, a reaction, positive energy and a good performance," he said at a news conference.

Kuyt took over as interim manager after Ismail Kartal stepped down last week. Fenerbahce have won one of their past five matches across all competitions. They lost 6-0 to Aston Villa in Champions League play last month.

Liverpool will be without midfielder Ryan Gravenberch due to a heel injury. Manager Andoni Iraola said the team must handle Fenerbahce’s home atmosphere.
