Canada earned its first-ever knockout-round win 1-0 over South Africa thanks to a late goal from Stephen Eustáquio.
The first half was controlled by Canada, which thrived on the counterattack. However, South Africa kept Canada away from dangerous areas in the box with a strong defensive formation.

Canada’s best look of the half didn’t come until the 43rd minute off a corner kick. Moïse Bombito made contact early, but Ronwen Williams made a stellar save and recovered for the rebound from Tajon Buchanan.
The second half was largely uneventful, as South Africa settled into a more passive playing style.
In the 74th minute, Canada’s best player and captain Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament, a big boost to the team. Just two minutes in, he played a nice ball to Promise David, who nearly made it 1-0 but just missed.
Canada’s attack instantly came alive with his presence, as their offense looked the best it had all afternoon when he slotted in.
As extra time began, Eustáquio brought Canada to its feet, scoring a screamer to make it 1-0 in the 91st minute. South Africa pushed late, nearly earning a look in the box, but Derek Cornelius made two critical plays to deny any real opportunity.
South Africa’s tournament comes to an end, and Canada earns its first-ever knockout round win. The story of the game was the lack of chances for South Africa, as they only earned one shot on target to Canada’s seven.
Canada will go on to the final 16 and face the winner of Netherlands vs. Morocco in the round of 16.
