Hawks fined $100K for sitting Trae Young for NBA Cup Game

The NBA fined the Atlanta Hawks $100,000 on Tuesday after concluding an investigation that determined that Hawks star Trae Young could have played in the Hawks’ cup game on Nov. 12. He did not play that night after being listed as out due to right Achilles tendinitis.

According to league rules regarding star players, “unless a team demonstrates an approved reason for a star player not to participate in a game,” it must have the star players “for all national television and NBA In-Season Tournament games.”

The league released a statement Tuesday regarding the issue.

“Following an investigation, including review by an independent physician, the NBA determined that the Hawks held Young out of a game that he could have played in under the medical standard in the policy,” the league said.

The Hawks went on to win that Nov. 12 matchup, 117-116. Young has played in every other game for the Hawks this season. Barring a new injury, this issue will likely be a one-time occurrence.
