Why LeBron James wants out of Los Angeles in 2026

The NBA world was flipped upside down on Tuesday when news broke that superstar forward LeBron James informed the Los Angeles Lakers to move forward without him as he’ll be playing elsewhere next season.

The 41-year-old will now be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market as he finds a new home for what is likely the final chapter of his career.

It’s no secret that the relationship between James and the Lakers wasn’t always peachy. Despite having star teammates like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, he reportedly had a number of reasons to leave Los Angeles.

“I’m told this is a happiness-led decision for LeBron James,” he said. “He feels like he needs to find his happiness elsewhere. Wherever he lands in free agency, it will not be driven by money, according to sources.”

While endless rumors about the issue will always be out there, Charania confirms that James isn’t leaving the Lakers because of a money problem.

While acquiring Doncic from the Mavericks in 2025 was huge for L.A., years of questionable roster decisions can’t be undone by one late-night trade for a superstar.

After eight seasons in L.A. and one of the most difficult NBA championships of all time, James will now finish his career in a different uniform.
