Lionel Messi had already placed himself a top of the soccer world, scoring his 17th World Cup goal and placing himself alone at the top of the all-time goal scorer list.

But he wasn’t content with just the one. Messi, who had scored a hat trick against Algeria on Tuesday, secured himself a brace and his 18th World Cup goal in the 90+5th minute in Argentina’s match against Austria Monday.

With their 2-0 victory over Austria, Argentina have scored five goals in their first two World Cup matches. With all five being scored by Messi himself.

While Messi has put himself alone at the top of the World Cup’s all-time scoring record, his title may already be in jeopardy.

France’s Kylian Mbappé, who has been a standout star in soccer’s “new generation” of players, currently sits at 14 World Cup goals following his brace against Senegal on Tuesday.

Tying himself for third place with Germany’s Gerd Müller.

England’s Harry Kane may also pose a threat.

Kane, like Mbappé, also scored a brace in his first match of the 2026 World Cup.

With his two coming against Croatia on Wednesday.

His goals would put him in seventh on the all-time list, tying him with Peru’s Teófilo Cubillas and Argentina’s Gabriel Batistuta with 10.

Both Mbappé and Kane have yet to play their second group stage matches.

With France facing off against Iraq on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and England taking on Ghana at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

As the World Cup continues, it’ll be excited to see just who comes out of the tournament with the all-time scoring record.
