Virginia Tech receives record-breaking $75 million donation

On Thursday, it was revealed the Virginia Tech received a record-breaking $75 million donation that will go mostly towards athletics. It marks the single largest athletics donation in school history.

The school announced that the donation was made anonymously by a four-generation Virginia Tech family.

A portion of the donation will reportedly go to the athletic department’s Invest to Win initiative, which aims to keep the Hokies competitive in the ever-changing landscape of college sports.

Thursday’s news is further proof of a newfound effort to make major investments into the football team. In November, the Hokies hired former Penn State coach James Franklin to be the team’s next head coach.

A month later, the school received an anonymous $20 million donation to athletics. It was the largest single donation in school history at the time.

In the new age of NIL deals and transfer portal chaos, Franklin is grateful for the investment.

“Football is the front porch of the University, and sustained investment is critical to competing for championships at the highest level,” he said in a statement. “This generosity provides the resources necessary to recruit, develop and support elite student-athletes while positioning Virginia Tech Football for long-term success.”
