No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team defeated Drexel Dragons 89–60 Tuesday in Charlottesville — the season opener for both teams.

Thijs De Ridder scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sam Lewis added 20 points and made four of Virginia’s 10 three-pointers. Johann Grunloh recorded 11 points and nine rebounds. The Cavaliers shot 15-of-19 from the free-throw line and 10-of-29 from three-point range.

Virginia opened the game on a 25–4 run. De Ridder scored 12 of those points in the first 2 minutes, 22 seconds. The Cavaliers led 51–27 at halftime.

Drexel turned the ball over 14 times. Latief Lorenzano-White and Ladricus Pittman each scored 11 points to lead the Dragons. Dillon Tingler added 10 points off the bench.

Virginia started four players who returned from last season’s NCAA tournament team: De Ridder, Grunloh, Lewis and Chance Mallory. They were joined by Nolan Adekunle in the starting lineup. Those four scored the Cavaliers’ first 37 points.

Drexel hosts Colgate on Saturday. Virginia hosts Northeastern on Friday.
