Tiger Woods released a statement on Tuesday revealing that he is stepping away from golf to seek treatment after he was involved in a rollover car accident four days ago.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well being and work toward lasting recovery.
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
Woods was arrested at the scene of the crash on charges of misdemeanor DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Officers said Woods’ eyes were bloodshot and they reportedly found two hydrocodone pills in Woods’ left pants pocket.
He also told police that he was looking at his phone during the time of the crash, in which his SUV clipped the back of a pickup truck’s trailer before flipping over.
The crash took place just days after Woods made his professional return in the TGL indoor golf final. Now, it’s unclear when he’ll be back as he spends some time away.
