The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the most passionate fanbases in the NFL.
As the city of Pittsburgh welcomed over 600,000 people to the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers brought those fans to their feet when they selected former Navy runningback and Pittsburgh native Eli Heidenreich in the seventh round.

As the pick was announced, the Pittsburgh crowd erupted in cheers as Heidenreich made his way to the stage. When he arrived, the cheers only grew as the 22-year-old soaked in the special moment.
“This is the greatest moment of my life. This is the greatest stadium in the world with the greatest people in the world. I couldn’t be any happier,” Heidenreich said after being drafted, according to Jeff Uveino.
After a storied career at Mt. Lebanon High School, he joined the Navy Midshipmen
In 2025, Heidenreich recorded nine total touchdowns with 77 carries for 499 yards. He also racked up 51 catches for 941 yards for the Midshipmen.
With 1,994 career receiving yards, he’s now the team’s all-time leading receiver.
As a proven catcher and versatile back, his fit on his hometown Steelers is a very good one. Saturday’s heartwarming moment is a reminder of how sports can strengthen the bond between and individual and their roots.
