49ers minority owner set to purchase Seahawks for $9.612 billion

A group reportedly led by San Francisco 49ers minority owner Vinod Khosla has agreed to purchase the Seattle Seahawks, the team announced on Saturday.

Multiple reports place the selling price at $9.612 billion, a new record for the sale of an NFL team.

The Khosla family must now give up its stake in the 49ers in order to take ownership of the reigning Super Bowl champions.

“We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere,” Khosla said.

The sale won’t be official until late August, when NFL owners will meet to approve the deal.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen purchased the Seahawks in 1997, saving the team from a relocation to California. His sister, Jody, has controlled the team since his death in 2018, when he directed her to sell all of his sports holdings and put the proceeds towards philanthropy.

Allen also owned the Portland Trail Blazers, who were sold back in August.

The Seahawks have made the playoffs in seven of the last 10 seasons and are fresh off a victory in Super Bowl LX. Now, it looks like they’ll enter next season under new ownership.
