Former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore avoids jail time in sentencing

Former Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore was sentenced to 18 months of probation and fined over $1,000 on Tuesday after taking a plea deal to drop his felony charges. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges, malicious use of a telecommunications device involving a domestic relationship and trespassing.

The charges stem from an incident that took place in December, shortly after Moore was fired by Michigan following an investigation into his romantic relationship with a woman who was a team staffer at the time. After being informed of his firing, Moore went to the woman’s apartment and grabbed a butter knife before threatening to harm himself.

Moore will also be subject to random drug and alcohol testing and must continue receiving mental health treatment.

As part of the probation deal, he has also been barred from owning a weapon and from contacting the former staffer.

District Court Judge Cedric Simpson spoke to the court on Tuesday and said he didn’t think incarceration was appropriate, but urged Moore to follow the probation guidelines.

“I don’t believe, when I look at the entirety of this situation, that incarceration should be appropriate,” Simpson said “I warn you Mr. Moore, should there be a violation, all bets are off. I don’t like sending people to jail, but I don’t have a problem doing it.”

Before his departure, the Wolverines were 18-8 in two seasons with Moore as head coach. He was fired shortly after the staffer revealed the relationship to school officials.
