Deion Sanders announces he’s cancer-free: ‘I’ve got my swagger back’

NFL legend and Colorado Buffaloes head football coach Deion Sanders is officially cancer-free after a battle with bladder cancer that made 2025 a difficult year.

He recently made the announcement while expressing his excitement for the 2026 season.

“I’ve got my health back. I’ve got my swagger back,” Sanders told Good Morning America. “Last year at this time, I was fighting cancer, didn’t know which way it was going to go. … I’m fully back now. Last year at this time, it wasn’t a good look.”

Sanders stepped away from the Buffaloes last offseason after revealing his bladder cancer diagnosis in 2025. He had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and coached Colorado through the 2025 season, in spite of his health issues.

It wasn’t a pretty season and the Buffaloes finished with a 3-9 record, but Sanders made huge additions in the transfer portal and Colorado looks poised for a bounce-back season.

The former Super Bowl champion was open about the troubles that come along with this type of cancer, speaking out about the bladder issues to be a voice for others that may feel embarrassed.

Now, he says he’s back to full strength and will be coaching in full force in 2026.

“We fought the battle and we won the battle fighting cancer,” Sanders said. “I’m cancer-free. I’m good. Great doctors in Colorado that have brought me through. God has brought me through. I’m thankful I’m healthy.”

“I’m ready to go coach my butt off this season. I’m having a good time.”
