Fans react to stunning ruling in Brendan Sorsby’s gambling case

Across virtually all major sports in America, athletes are strictly forbidden from sports gambling. This is especially true when it comes to an athlete gambling on their own sport or even their own team.

The penalty is almost always a permanent ban, but Lubbock County (Texas) Judge Ken Curry granted Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby an injunction to play in 2026 on Monday.

The 22-year-old had sued the NCAA after being ruled ineligible to play next season for placing nearly 9,000 sports bets earlier in his collegiate career, with some of these bets being on his own team when he played for the Indiana Hoosiers.

Monday’s ruling is unprecedented and the college football world was stunned when the news broke that Sorsby was granted the injunction.

The landscape of college sports continues to change and evolve, but Monday’s ruling takes this evolution a step further. In fact, it likely hurts college sports in the long run.

Allowing an athlete to return after gambling on their own team is practically unheard of and the reasons for that should be obvious.
