Sabres extend Benson on seven-year deal

May 14, 2026; Buffalo, New York, USA; Buffalo Sabres left wing Zach Benson (6) looks to make a pass during the second period against the Montréal Canadiens in game five of the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at KeyBank Center, Timothy T. Ludwig-IMAGN IMAGES

The Buffalo Sabres have signed winger Zach Benson to a seven-year, $7.5 million extension. His signing comes directly after the Sabres dealt Alex Tuch and Bowen Byram in an effort to clear cap space.

Benson was the 13th overall pick in the 2023 draft and became the first player from the class to sign a major extension. The 21-year-old had the best season of his three-year career, recording 43 points in 65 games for the Sabres.

He impressed in the Sabres’ playoff run, recording five goals and nine points in 13 games, while also providing a physical edge to the middle-six.

With Tuch’s departure, expect Benson to fight for a spot on the Sabres’ top line alongside Tage Thompson. His contract could help set the market for other restricted free agents from the 2023 draft class, as Will Smith, Leo Carlsson, Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli are all eligible for extension.
