A new report published by The Read Optional on Sunday reveals that NFL draft prospect Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in a fatal car accident in Miami back in March 2024. The accident was previously unreported.

At the time, Bain was a sophomore at the University of Miami. Police records show that Bain’s vehicle struck the back of another car on Interstate 95 before colliding with two concrete barriers.

22-year-old woman Destiny Betts, one of four passengers in the car with Bain, was immediately rushed to a hospital. She remained in a coma for three months and did not regain consciousness. She died on June 13, 2024.

No field sobriety tests were administered to Bain and although he was cited for careless driving, those charges were dropped prior to Betts’ death.

Her family provided a statement to The Read Optional regarding the tragedy.

“Destiny’s passing was the result of a tragic accident that occurred several years ago. While the loss remains incredibly painful for our family, we have worked hard to find peace and move forward. At this time, we are not seeking public attention surrounding this tragedy and respectfully request that our family’s privacy be honored. We also wish Mr. Bain the best as he continues his life and career.”

As a defensive end, Bain led the country in QB pressures in 2025 while helping the Miami Hurricanes reach the College Football Playoff championship. He is projected to be a top-15 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
