Masters now tied at the top after Rory McIlRoy loses huge lead

After Round 2 of the Masters ended on Friday night, just about everyone had concluded that Rory McIlroy would be the back-to-back winner. At the time, he held the largest second-round lead of all time with six shots.

But Saturday’s Round 3 was one to remember. As 28-year-old Cameron Young was in a rhythm, McIlroy stumbled.

Not long after Scottie Scheffler recorded a 65 earlier on Saturday, Young went out and did the same. At seven under par, the impressive round was the best Masters round of his career.

McIlroy didn’t completely drop the ball on Saturday, but three bogeys made for a less-than-ideal day. As he recorded a bogey on the 17th hole, he bent over in frustration.

“I didn’t quite have it today, from the first hole making that soft bogey,” McIlroy said. “I was doing my best to hang on, I scrambled well on the front nine. I’m going to head to the range here to try to figure it out. I’ll need to be better tomorrow.”

He ultimately posted a 1-over 73 on the round and within a day, went from having a historic lead to being tied at the top with Young at -11.

With one more round to go, Sunday’s action will be monumental.
