After plenty of confusion, longtime NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers might be returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers after all. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Rodgers is expected to visit Pittsburgh this weekend and work towards a deal to return to the Steelers.
While no contract details have been finalized, Rodgers is reportedly making the trip with the intention to re-sign with the team.
The news marks the potential end of Rodgers’ long free agency saga. Pittsburgh had initially wanted his decision by the NFL combine, but that came and went with no update.
The Steelers set a new deadline for the NFL draft, but he remained quiet as that rolled along as well. Thursday’s news signals a possible end to the uncertainty.
Rodgers will be joining a QB room that added Penn State’s Drew Allar in the NFL draft. The 42-year-old is still expected to be the leader of the team and will remain as the QB1.
He had a career renaissance with the Steelers last season, starting 16 games while throwing for 24 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Pittsburgh went 10-6 in those games, but took a lopsided defeat to the Houston Texans in the first round.
Longtime head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down shortly after and the team brought in Mike McCarthy as his replacement. Rodgers and McCarthy spent 13 seasons together with the Green Bay Packers, including a Super Bowl victory over the Steelers.
Now, it looks like they’ll reunite in an effort to push Pittsburgh back into a deep playoff run.
