Andy Reid provides positive update on Patrick Mahomes’ recovery

As Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to recover from a torn ACL and LCL, head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters on Saturday and gave a positive update on the QB’s recovery.

“He is in a good position to be able to do some things,” Reid said. “If he can do some things, [he’ll do it]. Phase 2 [of the offseason program], remember, there’s no contact and there’s no offense versus defense. It’s Phase 3 that you get into that. … He’s in a position where he can do everything, I think.”

Since having the reconstructive surgery in December, Mahomes has tirelessly worked on recovery and rehab, spending immense amounts of time in the Chiefs’ training facilities.

In March, he posted a video update showing his progress. The clip shows Mahomes executing a drop-back before throwing the ball while in the practice facility.

The Chiefs’ OTA’s begin May 26, which will put Mahomes at just over five months since first sustaining the knee injury.

Reid said it’s unclear if the QB will participate, but that he continues to work hard.

“I know he’s doing a lot of stuff right now,” Reid said of Mahomes. “That’s what I can give you. He is throwing the ball. He does it on his own, so he’s not getting in any trouble here.”

The Chiefs are coming off a down year in which they finished with a 6-11 record and missed the playoffs. The reported expectation is that Mahomes should be ready to go by or near the beginning of the season as they look to bounce back.
