FIFA World Cup 2026

Norway upsets 5-time World Cup champions Brazil in 2-1 victory.

Norway forward Erling Haaland (9) celebrates with teammates after scoring the first goal of the game during FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 match between Norway and Brazil

Erling Haaland secures himself a brace and helps continue Norway’s deepest run at a World Cup in the country’s history.

Brazil’s exit in the round of 16 is the earliest since 1990 following their 1-0 loss to Argentina.

Haaland’s brace brings his 2026 World Cup total to seven, tying him with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, the latter of who has yet to play his round of 16 match.

Norway looked to stun the Brazilian crowd early with what seemed to be a goal in the third minute.

But the offsides flag would deny Patrick Berg the early goal.

Brazil’s offense started to find its footing, with a great chance for Matheus Cunha in the 10th minute.

But a strong tackle by defender Kristoffer Ajer seemingly put the Brazilian push to a stop.

But referee Ismail Elfath, who originally had not given the foul, would determine after a VAR review that there was in fact a foul committed inside the box, awarding Brazil a penalty.

Interestingly, Vinícius Júnior would make way for Bruno Guimarães for the penalty kick.

Guimarães would strike his penalty right, but Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland guessed correctly, making the save.

Brazil would test their luck in the box again in the 24th minute following a quick counterattack.

Cunha would once again take an opportunity into the Norwegian box, but David Møller Wolfe would put an end to the Brazilian push.

Júnior would force another save out of Nyland with a strike from close range

In stoppage-time, Norway had their best chance of the day following a booming pass from Nyland to Haaland.

The pass would squirt away from Haaland but fall right to Martin Ødegaard, who would take the open strike right onto net.

Neither side could find the back of the net before halftime.

In the 58th minute Endrick, would come in for Cunha and just a minute later, would find himself in a one-on-0ne with Nyland.

Nyland would force the Brazilian to shoot with his weaker left foot, footing it wide and keeping the game level.

And Nyland’s day inside the box would continue to be busy, saving a deflected shot from Rayan which saw the goalkeeper contort his body back towards the ball to make the stop.

In the 68th minute, Brazilian legend Neymar would come on for Gabriel Martinelli.

In the 75th minute, Andreas Schjelderup would try to finish a great Norwegian sequence with a goal.

But Alisson Becker would make his third save of the match, keeping the game even.

Haaland had been kept quiet for most of the match, finding just a few opportunities.

But the feeling of his invertibility continued to rise as the match continued on.

And in the 79th minute, he would be contained no longer.

Following a cross from Schjelderup, Haaland would use all of his 6-foot-5 frame to head the ball right into the back of the net.

In the 85th however, Norwegian hearts would be in mouths following a great chance for Brazil.

But Nyland, once again, would keep the ball out of the with a spectacular save.

And in the 90th minute, Haaland would make sure to put the game on ice.

Following a Møller Wolfe pass, Haaland would take just a touch before firing a rocket of a strike, slotting it perfectly into the corner and doubling Norway’s advantage.

But Brazil would make sure to take one home with them following a penalty in the box, awarding Brazil their second penalty kick of the match.

Neymar would step up to the spot, looking to secure a consolation for a match which saw them completely outplayed in the second half.

And Neymar would deliver, but it would be too little too late, the full-time whistle would solidify Norway’s 2-1 upset over Brazil and their spot in the final eight.

Norway will face off against the winner of Mexico vs. England; their quarterfinal match will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
