NCAA president Charlie Baker backs March Madness expansion

NCAA president Charlie Baker spoke with members of the media on Thursday and when asked a question about a potential expansion of March Madness, he was supportive of the idea.

“We’re still talking about it,” Baker told reporters, according to ESPN. “I said all along that I think there are some very good reasons to expand the tournament. So, I would like to see it expand.”

The concept of another NCAA Tournament expansion is one that’s been debated for a while now.

As schools and executives seem to be more eager to expand, college basketball fans have appeared more hesitant to add additional teams to an already packed tournament.

The 68-team format currently in use would likely expand to 76 teams, according to a recent proposal. The current First Four round would grow to include 24 total teams that would compete in a multi-day tournament for a spot in the traditional 64-team bracket.

The last expansion was in 2011, when the tournament expanded from 65 teams to 68.
