The NCAA is now exploring major changes to its athlete eligibility rules, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.
An anonymous source told Dellenger that the new rules would limit athletes to five total years of eligibility from the time of their 19th birthday or their high school graduation, whichever happens first.

This would also mean that no waiver requests or medical redshirts would be permitted, with the only exceptions given to those on maternity leave, religious missions or military service.
Dellenger reports that this proposal has been worked on for several weeks and predates President Donald Trump’s recent executive order on college athletics, but mirrors a similar policy.
While the new proposal is expected to be reviewed by an NCAA committee next week, the rule changes could be implemented as early as this fall.
It’s unclear if current four-year athletes with no remaining eligibility will be granted a fifth year once this policy is implemented.
The new proposal comes urgently as the NCAA continues to face dozens of lawsuits from athletes seeking an extra year.
