NBA Playoffs 2025: Lakers-Timberwolves First Round Preview

The Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves will face off in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs in what is expected to be one of the most exciting matchups of the first round.

The most prominent storyline will be about Luka Doncic‘s L.A. playoff debut, but the matchup from top to bottom is an interesting one. The Lakers went 21-13 since acquiring Doncic, while the Timberwolves went 18-8 since the All-Star break, so lets dive deeper into the upcoming matchup.

The Headline

The Lakers and T-Wolves split the season series this year, with the home team winning all four games this season, but most of the attention will be on Luka Doncic as he takes part in his first playoff series for the Lakers. He’s averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists for L.A. and he’s only getting better, averaging over 30 points and ten rebounds in April.

Doncic completely dominated the Timberwolves in the playoffs last year, but that was with the Dallas Mavericks, who had built a roster tailored to Doncic’s skillset.

This season’s blockbuster trade was initially seen as a move for the Lakers’ future, but it’s producing immediate results.

The Matchup

With all due respect to LeBron James, the two best players in this series are Doncic and Anthony Edwards. They’re likely going to be guarding each other at least some throughout the series, and how their individual matchup plays out could be the deciding factor.

Edwards has come into form as the face of the Timberwolves, leading the NBA in made threes this season while maintaining his ability to drive and finish at the rim. He’s become an elite three-level scorer while also carrying much of the defensive load on the perimeter.

If he can effectively contain Doncic defensively without impacting his offensive play, the Lakers will be forced to run their offense through someone else. Unfortunately for Minnesota, that someone would be LeBron James.

The X-Factor

Timberwolves forward Julius Randle has arguably the most to prove out of any player in this matchup, and he could be an X-factor for Minnesota if Edwards and Doncic are struggling to guard one another.

Randle hasn’t had a great transition since being traded from the New York Knicks last summer, but he’s gained his footing as of late. He’s known for dwindling in the playoffs, but Randle is a seasoned veteran. In this new system against a new opponent, he could easily catch fire and change the momentum of the entire series.

From a statistical standpoint, these teams are pretty evenly matched, though Minnesota had slightly better numbers across the board this season. The Lakers struggle to grab rebounds, a problem that has been amplified since the Luka-AD trade. Jaxson Hayes‘ play in the paint will be vital for L.A.

The vast majority of wagers made on this series have been in favor of Los Angeles, but this matchup is as close as any matchup in the first round. Playoff experience would lead one to pick the Lakers to win, but the analytics point to Minnesota as a slight favorite.

Regardless, basketball fans should be in for an exciting matchup.
