At the annual end-of-season press conference on Monday, Miami Heat president Pat Riley set the record straight regarding his future with the team.
“I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign,” Riley said. “I’m not going to step aside. When I came here almost 31 years ago, I have the same attitude as I had in that press conference on the [cruise ship] Imagination. Period. I want another parade down Biscayne Blvd. It may come. It may not.”
The Heat finished the season with a 43-39 record and lost to the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA play-in round, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018-19.
Still, Riley said the team’s approach will remain unchanged and the philosophy will be the same.
“We are in a period right now, you don’t make radical changes right now, not in my philosophy,” Riley said. “I am not going to tank. We are not going to lose. We are not going into the lottery and do that insanity because I will quit — if I ever get ordered to go down that road. I am always thinking of ways to win.”
Miami battled an up-and-down season that saw Tyler Herro play in just 33 games due to injury. While their offense showed great potential during certain periods of the season, Riley is eager to get back to playoff success.
“We’re not good enough, and we’re not happy with it,” he said. “I think this is the first time in three years we can do something about it.”
