Jaylen Brown explained why he rejected Nike’s $50 million deal

Jaylen Brown started his own shoe brand in 2024 named 741. Brown’s 741 name is inspired by numerology.

The “7” representing spiritual awakening, “4” symbolizing stability and hard work, and “1” standing for new beginnings. The goal of Brown’s brand is to become the “future of performance.”

Brown started his brand after turning down a $50 million deal with Nike. He recently explained why he made his decision not to sign with the shoe giant.

“You sign these contracts, you have these little catchphrases that be in there. Like, if you say anything controversial, or anything that disrupts our ecosystem of our company, we can terminate your deal, terminate your contract. So that kind of makes you not have a voice.

“So a lot of our celebrities and our athletes, they never speak up, they never say anything, because they risk whatever their contract is if they do. So I don’t like compromising my voice for nothing and nobody. So I just told them I’d pass.”

Brown’s decision to not sign with Nike is honorable. If his shoe brand can really take off, it may lead to more athletes going off the grid and starting their own brands, as well.
