At least four people have died in Mexico City amid huge celebrations after Mexico defeated Ecuador in the knockout stage of the World Cup on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman received advanced medical care, but died of asphyxiation on the scene. A 48-year-old woman later died in the hospital of asphyxiation.

Later on, authorities reported that a man in his 30s was the fourth fatality. The man was taken to the hospital suffering from seizures and internal bleeding before suffering a fatal heart attack.

The tragic deaths come in the wake of increasingly large celebrations in Mexico’s capital for the World Cup.

Tuesday’s win over Ecuador was Mexico’s first in the knockout round in 40 years and the streets quickly became packed with fans. According to authorities, roughly 1 million people gathered in the city for Tuesday’s match.

As fireworks and pyrotechnics caused a panic, a crowd crush took place. President Claudia Sheinbaum said an official investigation is now underway.

“People need to celebrate responsibly,” she said during Wednesday’s press conference.
