Michael Wilbon blasts ‘diva’ Giannis Antetokounmpo for unreliability

If ESPN’s Michael Wilbon was an executive for the Miami Heat of Boston Celtics, he would have hesitations around making a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

During the latest episode of PTI this week, Wilbon discussed Antetokounmpo’s unreliability and how it has led to him no longer believing in the 10-time all-star.

“I don’t believe in Giannis anymore,” Wilbon said. “Giannis is a rumor. Giannis hasn’t done jack in the months that matter, which would be May and June, since 2021. Five years is forever in professional sports. Giannis is a multiple-time MVP, great player, a Hall of Famer, and as you said, a champion. He was that. I ain’t seen evidence of it. A league, particularly the NBA, can pass you by.”

Despite being one of the top players in the NBA and a champion, Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks have seen little success over the past several seasons. A break up is more than likely on the way this offseason with Boston and Miami speculated as the top suitors, but also has not gotten his team out of the first round of the playoffs since 2021.

Wilbon expounded on his point noting that players in this upcoming draft class which includes Caleb Wilson and AJ Dybansta could render Antetokounmpo’s physical advantages “obsolete” if he doesn’t perform more consistently down the stretch of the season.

However his most recent seasons have pushed Wilbon to being unsure if Antetokounmpo is even more reliable than someone like Tyler Herro.

“I would not rearrange my franchise for Giannis. Tyler Herro leads his team in scoring, he’s an all-star, I know he’s had some injury issues at times but he plays more than Giannis lately,” Wilbon said. “And he doesn’t seem to be the diva Giannis is. So if it sounds like I’m piling on Giannis, yeah a little bit for a guy, as a player I used to love.

“I love him less now because I haven’t seen nothing lately.”
