The Los Angeles Rams shook things up in a big way on Thursday when they drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The pick sent shockwaves through the NFL world as Simpson was projected to be a late first-rounder or even a Day 2 pick.
After the pick, Rams head coach Sean McVay appeared upset in a press conference and gave short responses to questions about the pick.

Even on his mid-draft phone call with Simpson, McVay seemed hesitant.
When asked about picking Simpson, McVay emphasized the that offense is still in the hands of franchise cornerstone Matthew Stafford.
“When you do look at it, I think the thing you like the body of work – let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team – you get a chance to be able to address the backup quarterback. We’ve got Stetson [Bennett]. We’ve talked about the importance of Jimmy [Garoppolo].”
To make matters worse, Simpson appeared on SiriusXM Thursday night and said he hadn’t even met McVay in person yet. This paints a picture of a head coach that seemingly had very little input on who the team drafted and with Stafford returning next season as the reigning league MVP, Simpson is likely to see limited action.
