LaVar Ball jumped on the international stage in warp speed during the spring of 2017. With the meteoric rise in popularity of his sons, primarily his eldest, Lonzo, LaVar shot out in front by doing what he does best. Talking.

Speaking as boldly and daring to anyone who put a microphone in front of him, LaVar gave one proclamation after another and didn’t care who it may offended.

From claiming UCLA would win the NCAA championship, and that Lonzo a then 19-year-old freshman, was already better than two-time MVP Steph Curry.

He was a media firestorm and each soundbite reverberated through the airwaves like wildfire. He was so hot, and no extinguisher could put him out.

With each hot take dissected to oblivion, there was one in particular that was discussed, but quickly dismissed as utter nonsense.

While making his media rounds, LaVar continued to bang his proverbial drum and state emphatically that all three of his boys would be in the NBA. The notion seemed so farfetched at the time with him first removing his youngest son, LaMelo from high school. He then pulled LiAngelo from school after an indefinite suspension from UCLA after a shoplifting situation in China.

However, throughout the twists and turns, LaVar stayed consistent. Even if he had his doubts, he never relented and continued his bold proclamations.

The dream became more real when the Charlotte Hornets selected LaMelo with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The following summer, LiAngelo joined the Hornets summer league team and eventually signed with the Greensboro Swarm.

Fast-forward to yesterday when Hornets GM Mitch Kupchak announced LiAngelo was signed to a non-guaranteed contract.

The move officially made him an NBA player and LaVar’s dream was made complete.
